What Is Medicare?

Am I Eligible?

  • Most people become eligible for Medicare at age 65.
  • People under 65 may be eligible after receiving Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) benefits for 24 months.
  • People with End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) may qualify sooner.

Citizenship/residency note: You must be a U.S. citizen or lawfully present and meet residency rules to enroll.

Medicare Enrollment Periods

Initial Enrollment Period (most people turning 65):

  • 7 months total: the 3 months before your 65th birthday month, the month you turn 65, and the 3 months after.
  • Enrolling during this period helps avoid gaps and penalties.

Other periods:

  • Annual Enrollment Period (AEP): typically Oct 15–Dec 7 — for changing Medicare Advantage and Part D plans.
  • Open Enrollment: limited window for certain plan changes.
  • Special Enrollment Periods (SEPs): for life events such as moving or losing coverage.
